I found this section of President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech particularly insightful and unexpected:
But the world must remember that it was not simply international institutions – not just treaties and declarations – that brought stability to a post-World War II world. Whatever mistakes we have made, the plain fact is this: The United States of America has helped underwrite global security for more than six decades with the blood of our citizens and the strength of our arms. The service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform has promoted peace and prosperity from Germany to Korea, and enabled democracy to take hold in places like the Balkans. We have borne this burden not because we seek to impose our will. We have done so out of enlightened self-interest – because we seek a better future for our children and grandchildren, and we believe that their lives will be better if others’ children and grandchildren can live in freedom and prosperity.
I’m 6′6″. I need a jacket. But, apparently, Patagonia, Columbia, North Face, Marmot, Cloud Veil, etc, hate me because I’m not fat. That’s ok. Cabela’s likes me and so does LL Bean….sometimes.
I’ve been editing some footage for a short piece about Dorado fishing in Bolivia. I ended up trying to go with a surrealist take but I may have not taken it far enough, partially due to editorial feedback.
This past weekend we went to the boiling river and other places down in Yellowstone. See Travelingmel.com for details and pics.
I don’t have a lot to say lately because I’ve been focused on editing. I just wanted to customize the blog skin real quick before I have a coffee date with Melynda.
Cheers.
More to come.
If you haven’t been tuning in to a legitimate news source, there is bigger news out there than the thing I keep seeing on the covers of the grocery store magazines [something about Jon and Kate and some kids]. The people of Iran are demonstrating in the streets in the largest numbers since the Islamic Revolution. This time they are standing for freedom and the right to free and fair elections, as opposed to this country where some of us riot when our team wins a basketball game.
It is an exciting and dangerous time over there and I wish the demonstrators success and safety.
For some good pics of this and many other news items that don’t deal with pseudo-celebs try the Boston Globe’s Big Picture
