We went down to Driggs ID this past weekend for a cousin’s birthday party and to introduced Melynda and Anders to a bunch of cousins they hadn’t met yet. I didn’t take any pictures of the party but the next day Melynda did an interview with a brewer at the Grand Teton Brewery and we got a tour. Anders and I enjoyed ourselves immensely though we had to take a break to play in the barley.

A little over a year ago, my Grandmother passed away at the age of 95. I went back recently to help my aunt go through some of her things and see cousins and friends. I guess I’ve gotten used to the arid west because it rained hard for a couple of days and it really felt exotic. The first day I was there I got to see a couple of school chums, as Melynda would put it, and their lovely daughter. They had tried to teach her to ask about Anders but she preferred to tumble around the room and giggle instead. I was still flattered.
My Grandmother’s stuff was in a warehouse and I could have literally spent weeks going through all the old papers (and cancelled checks from the 30’s. Seriously) and books and photos but just didn’t have the time. But I still enjoyed it.
After a couple false starts, I managed to relocate a few family sites at Spring Grove Cemetary and Arboretum. Spring Grove has something like 50 miles of roads and is really beautiful for a cemetary. I worked there one summer in highschool and a great uncle did too when he was a boy. It was kind of nice to spend a couple of minutes at each place and meditate on people I loved.
I also got a chance to see some cousins and all their kids (well not all, some cousins couldn’t make it but it was still quite a brood). Seeing the little one’s made me miss Anders of course and wish that he and Melynda could have been there. It was nice to check in, none the less.
Finally, they say an army travels on its stomach and the sense of smell and taste triggers memories. It seems that I define places with the foods I ate there. In Cincinnati, that means Chile 5 way, Frisch’s Big Boy, Brats and Metts at a Red’s game, and of course, Graeter’s Ice Cream. Unfortuneately, I held myself just to Graeters this trip, but I went twice. I suggest Mint Chocolat Chip Malts and Mocha Chocolate Chip Malts (a new one for me).
A friend of mine just posted a video to Youtube. Its an academic exercise discussing the effects and roles of Youtube on and in our changing culture. That’s the boring part, the fun part is that its fairly well thought out and also asks for feedback. They are trying to generate a serious discussion about the medium while using the medium. So here’s the link Youtube Vid
And here’s the video. Do me a favor though and go to Youtube and post a comment.
